Sheet metal patch panels of different gauge with an arc welder is kinda hard. Even with all the burn throughs, the piece is still rather solid.

What car are you welding on?

My 2000 Blazer 2-door 2wd. I’m prepping it to sell and didn’t want to sell a car with rusty panels. I’ve also put a bunch of new parts in it. Here’s the rust repair on the other side. http://oppositelock.kinja.com/oppo-confessio…

Oh wow! That’s awesome! I’d love to try my hand at something like that one day. Nice work! How long did it take you?

Nice job making it work! Not easy given the situation.

Only about three hours total for the welding/patch making... but the finish bodywork (body filler and sanding) takes for ever!

For a patch panel like that, did you buy it pre-shaped, or hammer it into the shape you need?

Heck no! I bought flat sheet steel and hammered it. Nothing can be done the easy way! I’d feel bad about arc welding a nice patch panel.

Nice. That’s certainly a skill I wouldn’t mind learning.

Haha, well luckily the patch in the picture was on a flat piece of body. The other patch was pretty easy too, I formed it around a tire and a vice. Proper tools are merely a suggestion (except a sheet metal brake, I’m so glad I have one).

arc welding instead of MIG is an interesting technique.

I don’t have access to a mig so I had to make due with what I’ve got.

Did you spend a bit more on one, or go the harbor freight route?

The harbor frightening break was good enough... it’s not like you can make a bad break. Vices though, have to go high quality.

I need to fabricate a few metal pieces for a large wooden table that I’m building. Chances are, I won’t buy my own brake, but it’s always nice to know what’s out there and what is good/good enough.

Yeah, the brake I have is only 18” wide and was like $30, so it wasn’t really that big

That’s not bad at all!
